Phaeolus schweinitzii

Dyer’s Polypore or Velvet Top
Fruiting shelves grow extremely rapidly at the base of affected trees. Phaeolus is the cause of “cubical brown rot” – which cause the lower stem and roots of conifers to crumble into a jumble of dark brown cubes.  This fungus is a major disease of  Douglas Fir, destroying the valuable butt log.
